FreshAIR Global Debut | Arts Engagement & Aesthetic Experience: Bridging the Gap between Arts & Sciences
Hosted by ETH Zürich Social Brain Sciences Lab in collaboration with Congressi Franscini
A global gathering of research pioneers from UPenn Neuroaesthetics, Max Planck Institute, University College London, Goldsmiths, NIH, Allen Institute, International Arts + Mind Lab, and countless more.
Here's to building more bridges together.
Emerging Insights
FreshAIR made its global debut at Aesthetics 2025 with our cascading, collaborative framework for translating aesthetic intelligence into applied innovation. This was a rare space for global exchange between artists, neuroscientists, psychologists, educators, and practitioners around a shared question: how can arts + science inform, challenge, and enrich one another?
For us, one of the deeper takeaways from this gathering is that bridging the gap between arts + science is only the beginning.
The next big opportunity? Bridging the gap between research + practice.
Since aesthetic experience shapes our attention, perception, and landscapes of memory, emotion, and meaning, it also has practical implications for how we design the spaces and systems that produce our shared futures. Research becomes even more powerful when it moves from observation to application — through aesthetic intelligence, we can introduce new ways of seeing, build trust across disciplines, and design environments that support wellbeing, imagination, and collective intelligence.
FreshAIR (Aesthetic, Interdisciplinary, Regenerative) is a space for the in-betweens. A space for research, innovation, and translation. We embrace the scenic route, inviting slowness, sensory immersion, and ecological awareness into our process. Rather than seeing art merely as individual expression, we sees the arts as early signs of collective intelligence: a way to surface patterns, find meaning in complexity, and build bridges between disciplines, cultures, and ways of knowing.
At Monte Verità, breathing in the bohemian history where the sierras meet the sea, the air itself became part of our DNA. We loved the balance of rigorous academic exchange and casual conversation. Featuring wonderful dialogues with our global peers and pioneers like Anjan Chaterjee, Fredric Ullen, and Susan Magsamen — this gathering reinforced our creative core: knowledge is not only produced in papers and presentations, but also emerges through relationship to people and place.
We are encouraged by the new connections we made, and opportunity to ask new questions for our shared horizons. As we returned to Texas, we are excited to bring these insights to life in the field, in ways that are both timely and tangible.
Where could society use a breath of FreshAIR? From research to practice, let's get creative in how we use beauty to guide behaviour, creativity to navigate complexity, and aesthetic attunement to support regenerative futures for people + planet.
Abstract - FreshAIR Lab / Scenic Route Studios
What if innovation began not with a breakthrough, but with a deep breath?
We believe that FreshAIR (Aesthetic, Interdisciplinary, Regenerative) might reinvigorate how we build towards the future.
Our presentation explores new frameworks for innovation at the crossroads of behavioral design, ecological systems thinking, and creative strategy, rooted in aesthetic and behavioral inquiry.
Cecelia Schoening holds a B.A. in Cognitive Science from Yale University, and brings a decade of experience in tech, design, and sustainable innovation across public and private sector. She founded Scenic Route Studios in 2022 to integrate her breadth of experience, operating both as a creative agency and experimental R&D lab. Scenic bridges the analytical and the aesthetic, creating actionable insight through participatory research, nature-based solutions, aesthetic engagement, creative partnerships, and north star value alignment — helping her clients organize around regenerative futures for people + planet.
We are excited to debut FreshAIR as a new methodology for innovation. Our strategy leverages mindfulness, biophilic design, and aesthetic engagement to identify patterns of opportunity across experience ecosystems. Grounded in both behavioral science and multidisciplinary arts practice, our unique model invites slowness, sensory immersion, and narrative intelligence as tools for systems transformation.
Drawing from industry case studies and experience across several creative domains, our approach proposes art not merely as expression, but as a strategic and somatic infrastructure for ecodiplomacy — a means of building bridges between disciplines, cultures, and ways of knowing. In so doing, we reframe innovation itself as a living, breathing process of relational design.
About Aesthetics 2025
In collaboration with Congressi Stefano Franscini and ETH Zurich, the Social Brain Sciences Lab at ETH Zürich hosted the Arts Engagement and Aesthetic Experience – Bridging the Gap between Arts and Science conference from Sept 28th to Oct 2nd, 2025 at Monte Verità, Ascona, Switzerland.
Conference Objectives
Create a multidisciplinary platform to exchange cutting-edge research findings and practices on the topics of arts engagement and aesthetic experience to foster a dynamic and productive academic environment for the dissemination of empirical knowledge.
Encourage multidisciplinary collaboration between academic scholars from different disciplines, such as the arts and science to enable constructive discussions and a holistic understanding of biological and psychological factors that contribute to arts engagement and aesthetic experience.
Promote metascience research methodologies, and practices to enhance the transparency, reproducibility and efficacy of research work within the scientific community investigating the arts engagement and aesthetic experience.
Conference Programme
To foster diversity, senior and junior researchers are featured as speakers from a wide range of disciplines related to the study of aesthetic experience. The conference will feature a mix of keynote addresses, invited talks and poster presentations all centered on bridging the gap between the arts and sciences. The conference aims to bring together visual and performance artists, art educators, psychologists, and cognitive neuroscientists to discuss three main topics: empirical findings, theoretical advancements, and methodological innovations.
With thanks to the Organizers
We are grateful to have been a part of this rich exchange, made possible through the thoughtful curation of the organizing committee: Emily S. Cross and Ionela Bara at Social Brain Sciences Lab, ETH Zürich
